Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is absolutely nothing you are expecting, but most definitely everything you never knew you wanted from a superhero movie. Director, writer, and SLU alum, James Gunn, has most definitely done it again. He has created a Marvel movie that is unlike any other. Both unique in it’s filming style and writing style, this film is an absolute must-see to kick off your summer vacation!

In the previous film, we left off with our Guardians of the Galaxy having just saved an entire planet (and essentially the whole galaxy) from complete and utter destruction. In this first film, our group assembles. They become a ragtag team of misfits, from thieves to runaways, and while we know quite a bit about our group’s recent and current states, we know very little about their past. This, is where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes in.

Following the theme of comedy, action, and amazing music, this film is nothing less than a pure piece of Marvel magic. The action is intense, the comedy is witty and well-timed, and, of course, who doesn’t love classic music?

Quite a bit is packed into this two hour creation, and it definitely isn’t light. Dealing with much heavier topics, and a lot of really unnerving backstories, James Gunn has managed to balance out the heaviness with a good dose of lighthearted humor. Our new characters are amazing as well, as most Marvel characters so often are, and the actors that play them, Kurt Russell and Pom Klementieff, speak for themselves.

If you’re into 3D I highly recommend it. I was on the fence about it at first, but I honestly can’t imagine seeing it any other way. Absolutely stunning. The visuals were surprisingly clear for a 3D movie and the scenes were really brought to life in a way that wasn’t obnoxious or overwhelming in the slightest (and not too terribly dizzying if you are as worried about that as I was).

Overall, Gunn has finally created the movie that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been waiting for. A movie that isn’t just enjoyable, funny and filled with action, but a film that has deeper and darker storyline lurking just below the surface. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a creative breath of fresh air and must-see for everyone, Marvel fan or not. So, on May 5th, grab your popcorn and 3D glasses because this is an out-of-this-world film that you won’t want to miss!
